WebChelators are agents that form stable ligands with metal, effecting enhanced renal or biliary excretion of the drug–chelate complex. Many chelators have been discovered during the past century. However, it was only after the mid-20th century that chelation therapy flourished. More than five lead chelators have been identified. WebExtracorporeal detoxification measures are ineffective because 95% of lead is stored in the erythrocytes. However, chelators, which are nephrotoxic, can be effectively removed by HD. The half-life of lead in blood is 9 h during combined HD and EDTA and 96 h when EDTA is given alone. PD, HMP, CRRT and TPE are generally ineffective (12,25).
